Subject: Good flick, but...
The movie gives absolutely no reason whatsoever for the doc dressing up in the costume. The ape was already dead and he didn't want the sheriff nosing around, but does everything to keep him doing just that.
The only motivation I can think of is that he figures since he's a mad scientist he might as well do something really strange or he would just seem like the kindly, misunderstood doctor which would negate the mad scientist part.

Subject: Boris Karloff as Mad Scientist Again
I do not know exactly how many mad scientists Mr. Karloff played during his careerBut every example I have watched until now is very impressive, including "The Ape", and always there is an air of real tragedy around them. Marvellous.

The whole cast does a good and impressive job, the innocent young girl is real innocent and has my sympathy (if she stays together with her boyfriend she will have to do the thinking because he is not very smart).

Henry Hall was a very busy actor in those times usually in supporting roles (correct me if I´m wrong) and very often he is the sheriff, for example in "The Flying Serpent" and "Voodoo Man" (both available here and highly recommended). He does an adequate job. But he can do something else. Watch "The Ape Man" where he is a doctor and accomplice of the chief villain.
